Loss Assessor Newcastle

Home Claims Assist is an independent loss assessor in Newcastle upon Tyne, and the only side we take in a claim is yours. From our office on Stanhope Street in Arthur's Hill, we handle home and business insurance claims across Tyneside and the North East, whether the damage was caused by a storm, a flood, a fire or ground movement.

Our Newcastle Office

Where to Find Us in Newcastle

Our Newcastle office is at 288a Stanhope Street, NE4 5JU, in Arthur's Hill, about a mile west of the city centre, between Fenham, Elswick and Spital Tongues. Unlike our regional offices, Newcastle has its own direct line: 0191 691 3162.

Leazes Park and St James' Park are both around a 15-minute walk away, and the city centre is a short drive or taxi ride.

Most of the work on a claim happens at the property itself. Call the Newcastle line or use our contact form, and a loss assessor will inspect the damage, gather the evidence and negotiate with your insurer's loss adjuster.

Insurance Claims in Newcastle: What We See

Tyneside's distinctive housing, its mining past and North Sea weather all affect how a claim plays out in the North East.

Tyneside flats

The Tyneside flat is the North East's signature house type: two single-storey flats stacked inside a two-storey terrace, each with its own front door onto the street. Most were built between the 1870s and 1914 for the workforce of the shipyards and engineering works, and they are still common across Newcastle, Gateshead and North and South Tyneside.

Although it looks like one house, a Tyneside flat is two homes sharing one roof and one set of foundations, sometimes with a shared drain run. A leak, fire or storm can affect both flats and both owners' policies, so we establish early which damage belongs to which claim. Our pages for homeowners and landlords explain how we help each.

Flash floods and surface water

On 28 June 2012, the storms known locally as the Toon Monsoon dropped 26mm of rain on Newcastle in 30 minutes. More than 500 homes and 54 businesses took in water and 377 streets flooded, almost all of it from surface water rather than the Tyne. The Environment Agency still lists Newcastle as a nationally significant area for surface water flood risk.

Flash floods move fast and the water is often contaminated, so photograph everything before the clean-up starts. Our flood damage claims page explains what we record.

Storm Arwen and North Sea winds

Storm Arwen arrived on 26 and 27 November 2021 with a rare Met Office red wind warning for the North East coast, and gusts of 98mph were recorded at Brizlee Wood in Northumberland. Five days later, around 64,400 homes across the UK were still without power, many of them in Northumberland, County Durham and Tyne and Wear.

Wind claims often turn into arguments about wear and tear, especially on older roofs. Our storm damage claims page explains how we answer them.

Coal mining and subsidence

Newcastle sits on the Northumberland and Durham Coalfield, the oldest area of commercial coal mining in Great Britain, with workings recorded from the 12th century, and not all of it is mapped. At the Bayfield Estate in West Allotment, North Tyneside, homes were evacuated from 2016 after subsidence from unrecorded shallow workings more than a century old.

Damage from past coal mining is normally handled by the Mining Remediation Authority, formerly the Coal Authority, under the Coal Mining Subsidence Act 1991, rather than by your home insurer. Because the right route depends on the cause, we look at the mining history before a subsidence claim is made.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the phone number for your Newcastle office?

Our Newcastle office has its own direct line, 0191 691 3162, open Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 5:30pm. You can also send us the details through our contact form.

I own a Tyneside flat. Who claims for damage to the shared parts?

It depends on the title deeds and both owners' policies. In a Tyneside flat each home relies on parts of the building that belong to or serve the other, such as the roof or the foundations, so one incident can involve both owners and both insurers. We review the deeds and wordings and present each part of the loss to the right policy.

Could the cracks in my house be from old mine workings?

In parts of the North East they can be, and some old workings were never mapped. The Mining Remediation Authority, formerly the Coal Authority, handles claims for coal mining damage, so the cause should be established before a claim goes to your home insurer.

Where is your Newcastle office and how do I get there?

We are at 288a Stanhope Street, Newcastle upon Tyne NE4 5JU, in Arthur's Hill, about 20 minutes' walk from St James Metro station. The links on this page open directions in Google Maps or Apple Maps. Please call 0191 691 3162 before you travel, as most claims are handled at the property.

Do you cover Sunderland, Durham and Northumberland?
